osobní rekonstrukce a způsob vidění světa
personal reconstruction and a way of seeing the world
Norse magic is an example of a magical practice rooted in a cultural context from which it cannot be separated. Without at least a basic knowledge of history, and of at least one of the runic futharks or futhorcs, they cannot truly be practiced. Without the Eddas and the sagas, it is impossible to establish a meaningful connection with that cultural context.
Even so, there is very little that we can state with certainty. The surviving testimony—the written sources on which we rely today—comes from the Christian period. As for the lives of the people who lived in earlier times, we often draw conclusions from the grave goods buried with them. In my understanding of Ragnarök, I align myself with the ideas of Neil Price, the British archaeologist whose book Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings is dedicated to the fylgjur of us all. At least in symbolic form, Ragnarök came with the acceptance of Christianity, which destroyed the old gods and established a new world. A similar thought occurred to me when I began studying the cultural context of the North about eleven years ago.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject, and particularly to anyone interested in Norse magic, because Price critically examines the likelihood and credibility of various romantic ideas about the Vikings and their age. At the same time, it is by no means a dry academic book—as one might expect when it describes the beginning of the Viking Age as a Ragnarök, a time when the Sun was literally obscured for years by a volcanic cloud produced by at least two eruptions of extraordinary magnitude: one somewhere in the tropics and another in what is now El Salvador, which caused the collapse of the entire volcano. The result was a volcanic winter resembling what we now call a nuclear winter.
Norse magic requires an understanding of the runes found in the three futharks, the heiti of Óðinn, the development of one's own techniques for working with the runes and incorporating their mythological associations into personal practice, the creation of runic combinations (bindrúnar), and an understanding of the principles through which personality manifests across the Nine Worlds.
In my personal understanding, the beings of the Norse tradition are independent intelligences existing throughout all the worlds. I do not perceive the álfar as fragments, nor as a hive or collective, but as individual intelligences in their own right. The fact that we cannot name them today is not their problem. If we want to approach a particular being, we need to get to know it and try to bring into our own lives what it did—or at least what little we know it did. Because what we call magical work or magical practice is, in my case, part of life itself. If magic is not in one's blood, it does not make sense to me. If we become aware of which part of ourselves corresponds to one being or another, our chances of establishing a connection increase.
I consider an understanding of the fundamental principles so important that I am gradually connecting the planetary principles of medieval astrology with the heiti of Óðinn.
